I don't understand what the Royal Mint are doing - I have asked their customer care dept. but they either don't have the information or don't understand my question. The release date for the New Pound Coin was March 28th 2017, so why have the RM released 2016 dated coins? I don't know of any other decimal coins like this, are there? Certainly the old pound coin was released in April 1983 and there are no 1982 dated coins that I am aware of. You can also see in the reverse image below that there is a tiny crosslet above the 'E' which doesn't appear on the 2017 coin. Further to this the RM wording on the blister pack says that 500 million 2016 dated coins have been released in general circulation. This all appears odd to me, did they move the launch date after they started striking coins? can anyone explain?

The coin with the crosslet mint mark is a limited edition of only 10,000 sets and that set is the only way to get that particular coin (unless someone splits a set and sells it separately) This set is called the Farewell & Nations of the Crown £1 Presentation Pack. I have bought two sets from the mint at £55 each as I collect £2 and £1 coins by type and date. I have all so far of both denomination except trial issues and all in BU apart from the 1999 SOTSOG £2 which was never issued in a set, so my example is just the best I could find (EF or better). I am still waiting for Mr Ingram to find me a better one :-)
As for the circulation issue 2016 £1 coins, the mint had to start production in March 2016 to get enough coins to replace the old round pound, all the new £1 coins minted in 2016 are dated 2016, approximately half a billion of them!

I don't buy that - I received my annual proof set the first week in January so all those coins were struck in 2016 but with a 2017 date - see my previous comment about the old pound coin. I'm also unsure as to why the crosslet appears on the 2016 new pound BU issue as it is the only uncirculated coin with this date - other than to stop people passing off circulated 2016 issue for BU - again this seems unusual for the RM to do this. The only other release date issue that I can come up with is the 1972/3/4 & 5 proof sets were retrospectively released in 1976. And the 1971 proof set was not released until 1973. But these examples are not really the same as the 2016 new pound as the RM were simply correcting the fact that they hadn't issued proof sets for those years. Can anyone find me another example where decimal coins have been minted with a date before the release year or indeed other unique crosslet or similar marking?

The scenario with the proof or BU sets is totally different, they are collectors year sets, what would be the point in producing those year sets and dating them with another date?
Many of the coins in proof or BU sets have different markings or legends to their circulation issues.
Just one example, 2015 WW1 £2 coin
BU Set, Obverse legend reads:- ELIZABETH II D G REG FID DEF TWO POUNDS Circulation Issue Reads:- ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 2 POUNDS

i dont think the royal mint have ever had to produce as many new coins as they needed for this , i think they said at the height of minting they are doing 40,000 coins a minute, or might be an hour lol
i bought the one with the cross crosslet mark, a bit pricy but i like the mint mark thing and it separates it nicely from any other format, ebay is awash with people selling coins with dubious wording and claims, needs looking into,

I agree about the one with the mint mark. I got them as I collect year and type, so needed one.
I work part time as a cashier and have examined hundreds of new pound coins, as yet I have only come across 2016 dated coins, no others, and the quality is poor to say the least, about 60% of the ones I examined (with a magnifier), I was unable to accurately determine the date that runs round the edge on the reverse as they were so poorly stamped, of those I could read, all said 2016. I have heard that some people have found some that say 2017 but have seen no proof yet. I will keep looking

i have not seen any 2017 ones either, i suppose when you make 500 million coins there will be a variation quality, unlike coins of not so long ago,
